It says right here in the book, “The entrance is guarded by a creature of some kind. It’s probably just a myth to scare off the superstitious.” He said, partly talking to the people in front of him and partly talking to himself, lost in his own world.
“Well, myth, superstition, or not we’ll be there soon enough. Keep your eyes open and be ready for anything!” The captain exclaimed to the crew.
“Captain, you should hear this. I’ve got a strange noise coming over the sonograph.” The radio tech said uninterestedly over the intercom.
“What is it? Put it through onto the intercom speakers.”
“TCK. CKKC. TCK. CKKC.” A high pitched chatter blasted over the intercom system, a mix between waves of static and what sounded like unintelligibly fast speech, like a digital entity.
“Good heavens. What on earth could possibly be making a noise like that?” The captain asked, eyes darting around on full alert, hands gripping the bar in front of him in panic, yet still standing up tall and confident.
“I don’t know. Maybe a bird of some kind, or an insect. Whatever it is it’s getting louder.” He replied frantically looking through the pages in his book trying to find something of use, but deeply unsettled by the noise.
“We’re one hundred and forty four light years away from the nearest planet, I don’t think there’s any birds or insects out here.” The captain said dryly.
As the noise began fading away, he said, “Well, whatever it was it appears to have gone away.”
An eerie silence graced the ship as no one spoke, seemingly just waiting for something to happen, everyone in a half state of hysteria and suspense.
“It looks like we are in the clear. Let’s -”
You know how right before you die, they say your life flashes before your eyes. It was like that, except it wasn’t my life, it was all of creation, all of reality. It was like I was flash-banged with infinite infinities. I could barely process what occurred. And then we were inside.
