They sat on their living room floor, a deck of couple’s question cards and a half finished bottle of wine lie between them, the bottle left over from their 20th anniversary dinner earlier in the night. She shuffled the deck while he sat waiting.
“These are stupid.” She said as she finished shuffling.
“You’re the one who bought them.” He replied.
Drawing the first card, she read it out loud, “What is your partner’s go-to coffee order?”
“You don’t have one. You prefer tea, with a little bit of honey in it.”
Drawing another card, she read it too, “What is your partner most afraid of?”
“Losing yourself.”
She looked up, holding the next card, and read, “Describe the most recent dream your partner had.”
“You dreamt of going to the moon.” He replied without missing a beat.
“I didn’t tell you about that dream.” She said, mildly perplexed and for some reason slightly on edge.
“You talk in your sleep. I stopped waking you up years ago.” he replied carefully. “They were in way too deep to mess it up at this point, but one can never be too careful.” He thought to himself as he looked at her with the expression of a sculptor looking at their creation.
“More wine?”
“Yes.” She replied, as he poured more, stopping at exactly the point in the glass where she likes it.
